CHaSS Book Proposal Charrette

Workshop/Training

In the Fall, CHaSS Research hosted a workshop with Darrin Pratt, Director of the University of Colorado Press. Pratt shared best practices for academic press book proposals. To follow up on the advice provided during this workshop, we will be offering a charrette - a hands-on, collaborative peer review - specifically focused on in-progress book proposals. Who: Participation in the charrette is by application and is limited to 12 CHaSS faculty (at any rank or campus), including lecturers and post-docs. Preference, however, will be given to early career scholars and those soon seeking promotion. Workshop format: Faculty will be split into small groups based upon their interests and backgrounds. Each faculty member will share their book proposal (in the stage or format that it’s in) prior to the workshop with their group to receive targeted feedback. Participants will each review 1 or 2 book proposals. The workshop will also include an overview of “best practices” for book proposals and summary remarks. Science Unwrapped: Celebrate Undergrad Research - Biologist Jessica Habashi

Panel Discussion/Presentation

Science Unwrapped, the public STEM outreach program of USU's College of Science, invites inquiring of minds of all ages to participate in science learning fun. Admission is free. Each event begins with a brief science talk following by hands-on learning activities and refreshments. Our Spring 2025 theme is "Celebrate Undergrad Research" in recognition of USU's 2025 "Year of Undergraduate Research." Jan 24 Speaker: Jessica Habashi is a champion of undergraduate research. Some years ago, the biologist noted a real-world program at the USU Brigham City campus and saw it not only as a challenge to be investigated, but as a meaningful research experience for students. The challenge? Bird-window collisions on the Brigham City campus. Bird-window collisions are often not though about as a major problem, Habashi says, yet the phenomenon is threatening bird populations worldwide. Habashi and are students are studying how often these mishaps occur and how to mitigate them. In the process, Habashi is teaching scholars how to design, organize, fund, conduct and present scientifically valid research projects.
