How To Break Into Publishing With Author And Illustrator Rachel Wilson

Debuting her picture book How To Pee Your Pants: The Right Way, Rachel Michelle Wilson tells a story about a bird who turns his embarrassing moment into a triumph of humanity. Join CHaSS and USU Honors on Tuesday, October 22 to hear how this English Literature alumna became a Kirkus and Publishers Weekly starred author and illustrator. Refreshments and food provided.

49th Annual Honors Last Lecture

The USU Honors Program presents the 49th Annual Honors Last Lecture featuring Professor Laura Gelfand, the 2024 Honors Outstanding Professor, on Oct. 23 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall. Gelfand will deliver a talk titled "The Future is Unwritten: Be Passionate," encouraging students to pursue their passions and make a difference. The event is free and open to the public, with a reception to follow.

This concert will feature the Caine Jazz Combo, a guest artist, and jazz students from the Music Department performing standard jazz tunes. The jam session is open to everyone, and attendees are encouraged to bring their instruments and join in. Hansen Life Sciences Retreat Keynote Address: Janet Iwasa

Lecture/Readings

Janet Iwasa, PhD, biochemist and data visualization expert with the University of Utah's Department of Biochemistry and School of Medicine, is the keynote speaker for USU's 2024 Hansen Life Sciences Retreat. Iwasa says "her broad goal is to create accurate and compelling molecular and cellular visualizations that will support research, learning and scientific communication." Iwasa's talk is free and open to all.

Hansen Life Sciences Retreat

USU's 2024 Hansen Life Sciences Retreat is open to all USU undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, faculty and staff, from varied disciplines, involved in the study of biological processes at the molecular level. The Friday evening, Oct. 25 keynote retreat speaker is University of Utah biochemist and data visualization expert Janet Iwasa, who says “her broad goal is to create accurate and compelling molecular and cellular visualizations that will support research, learning and scientific communication.” She speaks at 5 pm in ESLC 130 on USU's Logan campus. The retreat continues Saturday, Oct. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with research presentations, a poster session and career networking, at the Larry W. and Lindi Miller Champion’s Club at West Stadium Center of the Maverick Stadium, 880 E. 1000 North, on USU’s Logan Campus. Registration for the full retreat (Friday and Saturday) is $20 per person, and includes appetizers on Friday; breakfast and lunch on Saturday and a retreat shirt. Participants may submit a poster abstract, and should register and request their shirt size by Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024. chem.usu.edu

Monster Concert 2024: Monster Goes Galactic

Over 200 young pianists throughout Cache Valley and USU piano majors will come together to play music on over 18 pianos in the beautiful Daines Concert Hall. "20th Century Soundscapes: A Journey Through Blauth, Berio, Martinu, Bernstein, and Guastavino"

This recital invites you to explore the rich and varied soundscapes of 20th-century music for clarinet and piano through the works of Brenno Blauth, Luciano Berio, Bohuslav Martinu, Leonard Bernstein, and Carlos Guastavino. Each composer shaped the musical landscape of their time, merging tradition with innovation and creating works that continue to resonate with modern audiences.

From Blauth’s warm melody textures, Berio’s bold experimentation, and Martinu’s witty charm to Bernstein’s dynamic fusion of classical and jazz and Guastavino’s lyrical and elegant folkloric warmth, join us for an evening where avant-garde meets neoclassicism, popular mingles with classical forms, and tradition and modernity intersect in an exhilarating celebration of 20th-century music.
