Ethics Bowl
The Ethics Bowl is an Intercollegiate debate activity in which thousands of students compete every year. There is a regional season in the fall during which students debate a set of 15 distinct ethics cases. The cases can be about any topic with an ethical component. For example, a case may be about free speech rights on the internet, the permissibility of lethal injection, or whether the advanced directive written by a patient before they develop dementia should be honored. If students place highly in the regional bowl, they advance to the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Competition. At this competition, students debate a completely different set of 17 cases.
The Ethics Bowl at Utah State is offered as a class: Phil 3540: Ethics Bowl. Students may participate in the activity without enrolling in the class. For more information contact Rachel Robison rachel.robison@usu.edu and/or Mike Ashfield mike.ashfield@usu.edu.
