This is a community engaged research project to better understand communities' attitudes towards homelessness and homeless services. This project aims to help identify community perceptions, challenges and gaps in services among homelessness services
Project Details
Anticipated research goals:
- Analyze community perceptions and attitudes towards individuals experiencing homelessness
- Identifying perceived gaps in homeless services within the community
- Evaluating community support for the expansion of homeless services
The anticipated research design is likely to be explanatory sequential mixed methods with two phases: Phase one - Quantitative (i.e., survey) and Phase two - Qualitative (i.e., interviews, focus groups).
Primary Contributors:
- Drs. Dorothy Wallis, Vonda Jump Norman, Jess Lucero, Maureen Boyle – Dept. of Social Work
- A community partner panel
- Three undergraduate social work research and community practice classes
Anticipated Outputs:
- Full report of findings and recommendations for key collaborators
- Short report to be distributed publicly for communities and stakeholders (five pages or less)
- Infographic with most important findings for community and stakeholders
- A minimum of one manuscript to be submitted for a peer-reviewed journal
- Presentation to panel and community stakeholders as deemed appropriate
- One or more student poster(s) at the Center for Community Engagement’s Annual Celebration
- One or more presentations at a state or national conference

Anticipated Timeline:
- Project Planning and Design: August to October 2024
- Data Collection: November 2024 to January 2025
- Data Analysis: February 2025
- Reporting & Outputs: March 2025 – Ongoing
Further details and implementation are determined through the collaboration with our community stakeholders. This is a community-engaged research initiative, and it is crucial that all collaborators actively engage with and have a voice throughout each step of the process, including the design, implementation, reporting, and evaluation stages. The success of this project relies on the strong involvement and dedication of all participants.
