Utah State Journalism Professor Named 2026 Faculty Champion by National Community News Initiative
Erin Cox, Professional Practice Assistant Professor in Utah State University’s Department of Communication and Media, has been named a 2026 Faculty Champion by the Center for Community News. This national initiative supports university-led reporting programs addressing local news gaps.

The story Lydia Campbell wrote for her JCOM 1130 class on the USU rodeo team's new partnership with the USU football team made the Salt Lake Tribune Sports Section. USU Senior features new Olympic team on ABC4 News
LOGAN — River Rock, a Senior at Utah State University, was featured on ABC4 News this past weekend for a story he produced highlighting Skimo, the newest Olympic sport set to debut at the 2026 Olympic Games.
The story focused on Skimo, short for ski mountaineering, a sport that combines uphill climbing on skis with fast downhill racing.
Athletes race against the clock while transitioning between climbing and skiing, making it one of the most physically demanding winter sports.
Rock’s story highlighted how Skimo is growing in popularity in Utah and across the country as it prepares for its Olympic debut.
Rock went up Logan Canyon with team members to film the story with his drone.
“I loved getting involved in the community,” Rock said. “It was so cool to give attention to what these kids are doing and help out a local team.”
Assistant Professor Erin Cox mentored Rock’s work and helped him prepare it for broadcast.
“Rock put a lot of passion into this story and it was so rewarding to see him bring this story from pitch to broadcast,” Cox said.
USU has a partnership with ABC4 News, providing local stories while giving students practical opportunities to work on stories with real audiences.
