Deferment and Leaves of Absence (LOA)
Upon acceptance into the music therapy program, successful candidates may defer their acceptance and anticipated start date by completing a “Deferral Request Form” and communicating their intentions with the music therapy program director in writing. In the event that an actively enrolled music therapy major wishes to postpone coursework for one or more semesters, they may complete a “Leave of Absence” form and state their intentions to the music therapy program director in writing. Please be advised that a music therapy major is only allowed to defer and/or suspend their degree program for up to three years. After that period of time it will be necessary to re-audition for the program.
Probationary Status
Probationary status within the Music Therapy Program signifies a temporary suspension of a student's ability to register for courses and make progress within the program. This status is typically assigned to students who fail to meet academic or professional standards outlined by the department. While on probation, students are expected to work closely with their academic advisors and faculty mentors to address any deficiencies and develop a plan for improvement. Successful completion of the probationary period, which may involve meeting specific benchmarks or remedial actions, will restore a student's full standing within the Music Therapy Program, allowing them to resume course registration and progress towards graduation. It is essential for students on probation to actively engage in the process of self-assessment, academic support, and professional development to successfully transition out of probationary status and continue their journey towards becoming competent music therapists.
