BUSS Personal Information Policy

Personal Information Use for the BUSS Program

The Bring Utah Students to Space (BUSS) program aims to provide a unique opportunity for students to connect with space by having their names flown on our next satellite, GASRATS. This website outlines questions regarding our usage of the students’ personal information.

Please contact outreach@gas.usu.edu if you have any questions about the information on this site, or the BUSS program generally.

The BUSS Program

This section provides an overview of the BUSS Program and how students are involved throughout all phases of the program.

Program Overview

The BUSS Program is the outreach program for the Get Away Special (GAS) Student Satellite Team. The pinnacle of the BUSS Program is the opportunity for K-12 students across Utah to have their names flown on GASRATS as part of the BUSS Payload. The BUSS Payload is comprised of thin plates that will be engraved with students’ names and mounted within the structure of GASRATS.

The purpose of the BUSS Program is to inspire the next generation to pursue opportunities in STEM by giving students a personal connection to space.

Students’ Personal Information

This section discusses what personal information is used for the BUSS Program and how the information is used.

What information is being collected?

The BUSS Program will collect the first and last names of K-12 students who would like to be included on the BUSS Payload. Students will also have the option to provide an email for an email list that will send out more information about GASRATS, the GAS Team, and additional opportunities for students to be involved in the BUSS Program.

Why is the information needed?

By flying students’ names on GASRATS, the GAS Team intends to inspire students by giving them a personal connection to space. The names of students must be collected in order to engrave them on the satellite payload.

If an email address is provided, it will be used to provide ongoing communications from the USU GAS team. These communications are strictly limited to upcoming events, notifications about GASRATS, and team progress updates. The email addresses will not be used for individual messaging. Consent for this communication can be withdrawn at any time by clicking the “unsubscribe” link in the email or replying with the message “unsubscribe.”

How is the information going to be collected?

Student names will be collected using Microsoft Forms.

How is the information going to be used?

The students’ first and last names will be engraved on metal plates and integrated within GASRATS. The plates (and names) will then go into orbit with GASRATS.

If opting to receive follow-up updates, the given email address will be used to send further information about GASRATS, as well as share opportunities for students to continue to engage with the mission.

The names of the students will be shared with a 3rd party engraving service. The exact company has not yet been selected. This website will be updated once a selection has been made.

How long is the information going to be used?

The record of students’ names collected through the permission slip will be stored digitally until the BUSS Payload is integrated into GASRATS. Once the BUSS Payload is integrated into GASRATS, the name record file will be deleted.

The names on the plates will travel with GASRATS until the satellite burns up in Earth’s atmosphere at the end of the mission. The emails provided by the parents through the permission slip will be stored until the GASRATS mission is complete. The GASRATS mission is estimated to last around a year in orbit. The receivers of the emails will also have the option to stop receiving the emails and have their information deleted.
