Biography
Dr. Van Geem is an assistant professor with an emphasis in teaching. He primarily teaches undergraduate courses at USU, including degree requirements for social science majors like Social Statistics, as well as topical courses related to crime and deviance. He helped design and implement the four-year Criminal Justice major, and currently serves as the Undergraduate Program Director for the Sociology Program. In spring 2026, he won the Lawrence O. Cannon Award for Teaching Excellence for the then College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Dr. Van Geem’s research interests include improving higher education pedagogy as well as evaluations focused on restorative justice. He has collaborated with judges in Utah’s First District to conduct both process and outcome evaluations for the Mental Health Court, as well as technical reports on best practices for the Center for Growth and Opportunity at USU’s Huntsman School of Business.
In his free time, Dr. Van Geem enjoys walking his dog, snowboarding, and playing poker.
