Jacob Butera

Biography

Jacob Butera studied Classics and Ancient Greek at Miami University, Ohio before completing his PhD in Classics at Duke University. His research at Duke was focused on military history and the ways in which soldiers and battles were commemorated in antiquity. More recently, he has worked on battlefield topography and understanding how ancient wars were waged through the study of the landscapes in which they were fought. He has taught more than three dozen distinct courses on topics ranging from ancient art, the history of Greece and Rome, Latin, and Greek, to course on Carthage and Phoenicia, Classics in film, ancient indigeneity, Classics in Nazi Germany, and ancient Roman woodworking. Dr. Butera also regularly leads study abroad programs to both Greece and Italy.
