Student Updates Summer 2026

Emma Anderson, a History alum, was admitted to a graduate program at Emerson College for Popular Fiction Writing and Publishing.

Bali Briant, an ALC student, attended the University of Leiden’s Summer School in Languages and Linguistics.

Tyrese Cooper, a Classics student, and Prof. Jacob Butera worked together to start a Classics Club at USU.

Chase Edwards, a Philosophy student, recently published “On Understanding” in Dialogue, the undergraduate journal of Phi Sigma Tau. Chase will also go on to graduate school in a philosophically-inclined training program for therapists.

Harshika Gupta, a History MA alum, was accepted into Utah State University’s Technical Communication and Rhetoric PhD program.

Charles Johnson, a History MA alum, presented at the American Academy of Religion’s Western Regional Conference at the University of Nevada.

Emily Kovacic, a recently graduated Folklore MS student, helped write a successful grant to the Pomeroy Foundation to fund the Mendon May Day marker. You can read more about that here.

Sarah Mayers, a History alum, recently took a role as Museum Host at the new Museum of Utah.

History Graduate Students, Madison Maw-Carlstrom and Sam Schmuhl, gave an oral presentation at this year’s Student Research Symposium on their work with Prof. Sauda Nabukenya and the Michigan Collaborative to End Mass Incarceration. Both Madison and Sam’s presentations were given the Best Presentation Awards for the 2026 SRS.

Madison Maw-Carlstrom, a History Graduate student, won two competitive research grants for her thesis project. One was the Michael Kraus Research Grant with the American Historical Association, and the other was with the American Philosophical Society Philips Fund for Native American Research. Madison also presented twice on her current research to scholars and public historians at the Rockefeller Library in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.

Alisa McArthur, a Senior History student, finished her internship at the Whitaker Museum in Centerville, Utah by putting together an exhibit celebrating Women’s History Month.

Zoe’Swanna McGee, a History MA alum, was selected for a competitive summer internship with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in Washington DC.

Tyler Perry, an ALC alum, was accepted into Indiana University’s Classical Studies PhD program.

Mia Sharpe, a Classics alum, was accepted into the MPhil program in Classics at the University of Cambridge’s King’s College.

Tennessee Tarrant, an ALC alum, was accepted into the History PhD program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Trent Thurston, a History Graduate student, presented his research at the Pacific Coast Branch of the American Historical Association annual conference in Las Vegas.
