Student Spotlight: Camille Davis

Camille Davis’s passion for language education led her to pursue a master’s degree in Second Language Teaching at Utah State University, where she’s been able to deepen her understanding of the theories and science behind second language acquisition.

“Working full-time as an EL Specialist and raising three kids keeps me busy, so the online format has been a perfect fit,” Camille said. “It gives me the flexibility to manage my schoolwork around my schedule without worrying about extra time on campus or traveling.”

One project that stood out to Camille was the final assessment in Dr. O’Neill’s class, which wasn’t a traditional final test.

“Dr. O’Neill asked for our input on how we wanted to show what we’d learned, and it became such a collaborative and engaging process instead of a test of memorization,” Camille said. “It really helped lower the pressure and, at the same time, strengthened my understanding because I had to explain and discuss what I’d learned with my classmates.”

As she continues with the program, Camille has seen an impact on her current work and future goals.

“I feel much more confident now in how I design lessons and adjust materials to fit what research shows will work best for my students,” she said. “I also have a stronger grasp of how to look at student data and identify where misunderstandings may have developed so I can plan more targeted support.”

Looking ahead, Camille hopes to build on her experience and make a broader impact in the field.

“I would like to work at the university level someday and contribute to the essential work in ESL instruction and classroom support,” she said. “It is extremely valuable to have this degree in combination with my classroom experience.”

Camille encourages anyone considering the MSLT program to take the leap, no matter what your language teaching background.

“This program helps you teach students a second language, no matter what age level or classroom setting you’re in,” Camille said. “Even online, it’s been great to engage in discussions with familiar peers each week. The professors are flexible and tailor assignments to fit your situation, which makes the work immediately relevant. Everything I’ve learned has been directly applicable to my current role and my future goals in the field.”
