Bilingual proficiency in English and the other language may be demonstrated in the following ways:
- High school diploma or equivalent, or university/college degree from an English-speaking country
- Successful completion of extensive coursework at the post-secondary level, resulting in a degree, with the majority of classes conducted in English
- Time spent studying and/or working in an English-speaking country, where you were required to perform tasks at a professional level in English daily
- Passing score on any English language proficiency test from a reputable testing organization (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS) with a level of B2 in CEFR or equivalent
- Successful passing of an established interpreter/translator certification exam (that includes a language-specific performance test), such as:
- The Federal Court Interpreter Certification Exam (FCICE)
- Any National Center for State Court (NCSC) exam
- State or federal certification or oral language exams ACTFL Advance Midlevel or IRL level 2
Required Courses for the Legal and Business Translation & Interpretation Certificate
Development of communication skills in Spanish for international Hispanic business purposes.
This course introduces students to translation theories and practice. Coursework introduces the complex task of spoken language interpreting, the role of translators and interpreters, simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, and the role of norms in legal translation.
This course covers legal and business translation. It focuses on building conceptual knowledge in the legal and business contexts. It introduces students to professional, nationally-accepted standards of translation practice and performance and uses authentic materials and contextually-meaningful situations.
This course begins the in-depth study of the theory and practice of consecutive interpretation. It reviews legal and medical concepts and covers policy and law relevant to interpreter practice, theory, and special issues in legal, medical, and business settings.
Continue the in-depth study of consecutive interpretation. The course explores more complex legal and medical concepts; policy and law relevant to interpreter practice; and special issues related to a variety of legal, medical, and business settings.
This course covers the communication of language skills on resumés, cover letters, interviews, etc. Students learn to 1) provide evidence of foreign language proficiency and cultural and analytical skills gained from foreign language studies; 2) share this evidence with employers.
