Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish are required for taking these classes. This may be demonstrated in the following ways:
You can take the Spanish proficiency test to be able to start takiing the SPAN 4081 Medical Interpreting Training. If you have already taken upper-level Spanish classes you can inmmediately enroll in any of the translation and interpretation classes.
Current Courses Offered
Introduction to translation theories and practice, including the complex task of spoken language interpreting, the role of translators and interpreters, simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, and legal translation.
This course focuses on building conceptual knowledge and language and translation competence in medical settings. This course introduces professional and national standards of translation practice and uses authentic materials and contextually meaningful situations. Students gain a broader understanding of translation practice skills in machine translantion.
This course covers legal and business translation and introduces students to professional, national standards of translation practice and performance while using authentic materials and contextually meaningful situations.
This course continues the in-depth study of simultaneous interpretation. Its focus is building conceptual knowledge in legal/medical/business contexts and advanced language and interpreting proficiency. Students will review professional, nationally accepted standards of practice and performance.
Continue the in-depth study of consecutive interpretation. The course explores more complex legal and medical concepts; policy and law relevant to interpreter practice; and special issues related to a variety of legal, medical, and business settings.
Familiarization with approaches to translation, special grammatical structures, specialized vocabulary, and reference materials and aids, including hands-on practice using Russian in a variety of service and business contexts.
This course introduces students to the practice of French-to-English translation to improve writing skills and language fluency while giving students experience and the opportunity to explore basic concepts of translation practice.
Introduces students studying Portuguese to translation concepts and strategies. Students gain exposure using a variety of methods for researching unfamiliar terminology, including terms not found in ordinary bilingual language dictionaries.
