History on the Newel & Jean Daines Concert Hall

The Newel and Jean Daines Concert Hall opened during the 50th Anniversary Gala of the Chase Fine Arts Center on October 18, 2017. Formerly known as the Kent Concert Hall, the venue now has a seating capacity of over 1,700—including an audience-facing choir loft at the rear of the stage, raised loge seating sections on both sides of the orchestra level, and balcony seating with five sections.

Designed by the Salt Lake City architecture firm Sparano + Mooney, in collaboration with California-based Newson Brown Acoustics, the Daines Concert Hall was specifically created for orchestra, band, and choral programs.

It serves audiences throughout the region with world-class music and programming. The renovation included a new acoustical shell, acoustically reconfigured walls and finishes, and upgraded theatrical, audio, and lighting equipment to enhance the venue’s acoustic performance for both performers and audiences. The standard lighting and sound layouts were designed to support these types of events.

The hall also features the newly restored Campbell-Holtkamp Organ, made possible through the generous donations of Paul and Paulette Campbell. Paulette Campbell is a former organ student at USU. The organ was originally commissioned in 1973, primarily through donations from Melvin and Editha Kent.

Utah State University is one of the few institutions of higher education to have such an instrument. The restoration of the pipes to their original purity, along with technological upgrades to the console and wiring, makes the Campbell-Holtkamp Organ one of the crowning jewels of this space.
