International Shipping FAQs
Where do I find my item's Harmonized System (HS) code?
You can find your item's Harmonized System code by visiting the Census Bureau's search engine. Chapters 28 and 29 in particular contain organic and inorganic chemicals. When entering your product's description, be specific, i.e. nucleic acids rather than chemical sample. FedEx requires your HS code to have at least 6-digits. If you are having trouble finding your code, come to MCL 140 for assistance.
Where do I find my recipient's Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number?
Recipients should be able to provide you with their EORI number. If you anticipate shipping to a company, plan to ask for that information in advance. Packages without an EORI number can be delayed and potentially refused at customs.
How do I determine the customs value of my package?
Customs value is determined by its transaction value. A simple way to consider your item's value is to ask "How much would it cost to replace this item?" Customs value should include material, time, and labor considerations, but not shipping costs.
What should I include in my commodity description?
Commodity descriptions should be as specific as possible. Include what you are shipping, what it is made of, and what it's intended use is. Chemical solutions should include percent composition, e.g. 0.9% saline. If you are unsure whether to include certain information, err on the side of including more. Packages without significant descriptions can be delayed at customs.
What is a Declaration of Biological Shipments and why are the staff asking for one?
This customs document describes biological materials in an international shipment. Staff will generally request one when the contents came from, contain, or can reproduce a living organism—including cells, tissues, blood, proteins, DNA, cultures, or recombinant materials. It helps carriers and customs officials identify applicable requirements and prevent delays.
