Congratulations to Emily Kovacic, master's student in Folklore Studies, who was awarded a scholarship by the Cache Valley Historical Society.

Emily Kovacic, master's student in Folklore Studies, was awarded a scholarship by the Cache Valley Historical Society in support of her project to document the community history surrounding the Little Logan River.

Under the supervision of Folklore faculty Afsane Rezaei, Emily’s project will explore the cultural, ecological, and historical significance of the Little Logan River in Cache Valley, focusing on the community’s responses to the Logan River Watershed Project (LRWP). Through fieldwork and archival research, the project will document oral histories and historical materials that highlight the river’s impact on daily lives, traditions, and collective memory of Cache Valley residents. The scholarship committee especially praised the projects' emphasis on presenting multiple perspectives on the topic to foster community dialogue around the future of the river, addressing the desire to improve infrastructure with the need for cultural preservation.

The final product will be a publicly accessible digital exhibit developed through Utah State University's Special Collections and Archives. In addition to creating the exhibit, Emily will present her work at the Cache Valley Historical Society meeting in April 2025.
