Carter Hansen Named English Teaching Student of the Year
The English Department has named Carter Hansen the English Teaching Student of the Year for 2023-2024. The English Teaching Committee chose Carter because he is “an outstanding student and motivated educator.”
Carter decided to pursue English Teaching because of many influential educators in his life, including his father and his high school English teacher. He said he felt very connected to writing and literature, and he wanted to make the same impact on students that his teacher made on him.
During his undergraduate studies, Carter took advantage of many opportunities, including attending the Utah Council of Teachers of English and Utah State Board of Education annual conferences. He has also worked as a Writing Fellow and learned about the publishing process, which has continued to motivate him to become a published author.
Carter said he will continue his teaching career: “In November of 2023, I had the opportunity to apply for an English Teacher position at Sky View High School to fulfill my student teaching requirements. It was a temporary position. I re-interviewed for the position at Sky View recently, and I am thrilled to announce that I will be continuing my career as an English Teacher at Sky View High School.”
Carter said his time with the English Department will help him throughout his life and career. He reflects, “I plan to use the skills I learned from my degree to better my interactions with people, as well as become a more contributing member to society. I've sought after volunteer opportunities because my skills as an English Teacher—skills of empathy and problem solving—allow me to effectively further society in a meaningful way.”
