Highlighting the Digital Writing and Publication Certificate

Digital Writing and Publication is an 18-credit certificate designed to involve students in the worlds of creative writing, technical communication, and journalism. Students in the program take courses from all three disciplines in order to develop and refine their skills in language and presentation.
Professor Jennifer Sinor reflects on the certificate’s potential to help students understand how their work makes a real-world impact: “As writers, we commit ourselves to making art, but we also have to be aware of how our work eventually reaches readers. Students in technical communication as well as journalism are invested in the story at the core. This certificate gives students the tools they need to share their passion with an audience. Whether it is learning to create video, developing a platform for your work, or understanding how consonance and assonance binds our lines, students interested in how story makes a difference in our lives will benefit from these courses.”
The certificate offers a lot of variety in course offerings, as students choose out of the designated core and elective courses. Topics range from the study of mass media law and ethics to discussions on technology and activism to fiction writing. There is also the opportunity for students to do a communications or English internship to receive credit.
“A certificate of proficiency,” Jennifer says, “is a tangible representation of the fact that you can communicate what you love to an audience and, in so doing, transform the world.”
