Sarah Young Named General English Student of the Year

The English Department has named Sarah Young the General English Student of the Year for 2023-2024. The General English Committee said, “General English is happy to choose Sarah Young as their outstanding student of the year. In her coursework, Sarah pushes outside her comfort zone to ask hard questions. Her writing is thoughtful and polished, and she holds herself to an extremely high standard. In a quiet but intense way, Sarah goes above and beyond the requirements asked of her.”

Sarah has always wanted to work in the legal field, and she decided to get an English degree to prepare for a career. Sarah noted, “I wanted to be better at the things I loved doing: reading, writing, and researching.” Two of the classes she found most influential were Professional Editing and Workplace Research because they helped her refine technical and social skills and have been noteworthy in job applications.

After graduation, Sarah will be working as a Legal Assistant/Paralegal and Hundley & Harrison in South Jordan. She said her time as a USU student has been instrumental throughout her life: “I will use the research and reading/writing skills I've gained the most in my career, but I think my degree will have an even more extensive impact on my life. I've become a better public speaker and communicator of research and academia, as well as my own opinions and even emotions —my education has helped me grow into a person capable of having difficult conversations, managing stressful situations with clarity and efficiency, and to be a more empathetic and conscientious friend, coworker, and learner. I wouldn't trade these last few years for anything.”
