TCR Faculty and Students Present at SIGDOC Conference

Technical Communication and Rhetoric faculty, students (undergraduate and graduate), and alumni had a strong presence at the annual conference of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Design of Communication (SIGDOC). The conference took place on Oct 20-21 in Arlington, Virginia, hosted by George Mason University. 

Assistant Professor Chen Chen serves on the SIGDOC executive committee as secretary/treasurer. 

Associate Professor Jared Colton presented with PhD alumna Dr. Rachel Bryson on "Discipline and Punish: The Problems with Policing AI in Student Writing.” 

Professor Rebecca Walton presented with current PhD student Dorcas Anabire and alumus Dr. Jamal-Jared Alexander on "Approaching AI through a Social Justice Lens: Considerations for Graduate Program Applications.” 

Associate Professor Avery Edenfield presented with Derek Ross, Kayleigh Pears-Keating, and Rachael Jordan on "Old-Skool Tech: Low-Tech Responses to a New-Tech World.” 

Undergraduate TCR students Katie Bingham, Olivia Colton, and Maya Higley participated in the Student Research Competition and won third place in the undergraduate division with their project “Google Explore App: UX Redesign,” which was completed for Chen’s TCR4240 User Experience Design class from spring 2024. 

PhD student R. Elle Smith presented "Rethinking Attendance in Technical Communication Education: Virtue Ethics and Emerging Teaching Modalities." 

PhD student Cara Haderlie presented "Generative AI Policy: A Pedagogical Communication Tool and Virtue Ethics Gateway." 

Alums Sam Clem, Rachel Bryson, Hannah Stevens, and Ryan Cheek presented: "You Want Me to Teach What?!: Emerging Technologies, Required Knowledge, and Pedagogical Practice." Ryan also delivered a poster presentation on, “Biden’s Puppet and McConnell’s Protégé: Manipulative Political Communication Design in the 2023 Kentucky Governor's Race” with Samuel Allen.
