Student Spotlight: Chloe Scheve

Chloe Scheve is an undergraduate student pursuing English with a literature emphasis and minoring in environmental studies. She has excelled during her time at USU, serving as Co-Editor of Fiction for USU’s undergraduate literary magazine, Sink Hollow, as an Undergraduate Teaching Fellow, and as a tutor at the Writing Center. “Chloe is a stellar student, who is doing just about everything a student can and should do to make the most of their time in the English Department. She’s truly cultivating important skills and mentoring relationships here at USU,” says Senior Lecturer Ashley Wells.   

Chloe recently got accepted into the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. She will be presenting on literary mentorship in creative writing and how it can influence emerging writers, especially those in marginalized communities and those who, like her, are first-generation students. “I hope to expand the concept of mentorship into a wider perspective, addressing the resources available for students outside the male-dominated classroom,” she comments.

Attending English Department readings have been some of the most influential experiences Chloe’s had during her time at USU, including the May Swenson Writers Series and the Ken Brewer Festival of Writing. She adds, “Readings and open mics hosted by Helicon West have influenced my own writing and allowed me to feel a sense of belonging in a community larger than myself. I love having the experience of hearing a writer’s work read in their own voice.” 

In addition to readings, Chloe said going to the Department of Music concerts and the Film Club’s weekly screenings has helped her positive experience at USU. “Being surrounded by different forms of art has truly helped me to feel more at home,” she reflects.

For Chloe, the English Department has created a supportive and caring environment for her to be a part of: “I can take risks in my writing and articulate my thoughts without fear of judgement. The act of learning is so sacred to me, and the encouragement I’ve found within the department has transformed my education.”
