Chen Chen

In just the past two semesters, English Department Assistant Professor Chen Chen has published three articles or chapters in academic journals.

Paragraph - The first was a co-authored article appearing in the Journal for the History of Rhetoric, entitled “A Reflection on Archival Liberation and Power.” The article examines the reflective learning of the 2023 Summer Institute of the Rhetoric Society of America seminar participants, led by Ann George and Tarez Graban. “The seminar introduced me to critical practices of doing archival work in ways that interrogate prior conceptions of archival liberation and power,” Chen reflects. “This work will help guide those later endeavors.”

The second article, appearing in Peitho: Journal of the Coalition of Feminist Scholars in the History of Rhetoric & Composition, is entitled, “Digital Surveillance and Control of Chinese Feminists and a Transnational Response.” The paper highlights a case study of violence against Chinese feminists and analyzes how surveillance technologies, both contemporary and historic, impact transnational communities. “In these studies, I highlight the rhetorical practices of feminist activists across national borders as they navigated challenges such as censorship and online aggression,” Chen comments. “I have learned much from these activist communities myself as a member of the Chinese feminist diaspora, so I am proud to introduce this work to the field of feminist rhetorical studies.”

Finally, Chen’s chapter, “Transnational Chinese Digital Feminist Rhetorics: A Comparative Perspective,” was published in the first edition of The Routledge Handbook of Contemporary Feminist Rhetoric. The chapter overviews Chinese and Chinese diaspora communities’ rhetorical strategies in contemporary transnational feminist activism. Chen says, “I examine how Chinese feminist activism moves from global to local and local to global, paying attention to how domestic tensions in China and the interlocking global geopolitical powers as well as information governance influence Chinese feminist activist rhetorics.”

Congratulations, Chen, on these incredible publications!
