Magic and Astrology: Shakespeare’s Interconnected World

Join us for the opening of a student-curated exhibit, “Magic and Astrology: Shakespeare’s Interconnected World”! Created by the students of English 5300, the exhibit will introduce you to the weird world of early modern science, in which magic and astrology were part of academic learning. Come learn how Shakespeare’s cosmos was thought to be alive with invisible sympathies and antipathies that connected human beings to the stars, planets, the weather, animals, minerals, and plants. The exhibit showcases the library’s superb collection of sixteenth and seventeenth century books on subjects such as magic, astrology, medicine, diet, animals, herbs, and human anatomy.
The opening reception (with refreshments) is Wednesday, April 2nd, from 3:00-4:00 p.m., in the Lower Level of the Merrill-Cazier Library, followed by a Tanner Talks lecture with visiting professor Sarah Neville, “Book Use/Book Value: The Paradox of Renaissance Herbals,” at 4:00 p.m. in Library 101.
