During her time at USU, Chloe Pritt studied English with a minor in Psychology and was a member of Sigma Tau Delta. She reflects on how her experiences with professors at USU have helped shape her future classroom.

Since leaving USU in 2018, Chloe has been hard at work teaching secondary Language Arts for 9th through 12th grades. She just started her seventh year of teaching in July and recently received the Apples for Teachers award for her compassion and consistency with a student who was struggling with their home life. “I felt very honored and blessed to receive this award. At the end of the day, I want my students to read great literature and know where to place a comma, but even more than that, I want them to leave my classroom knowing that they have at least one adult who cares about them,” she reflects.

Chloe talks about how the USU English Department taught her how to be a lifelong learner, which has helped her in her career. The skills she developed through the department, such as curiosity, empathy, critical thinking, and communication, have influenced who she is not only as a teacher, but as a person.

“One of the most valuable lessons I learned from the English Department was that reading and writing are much more than analyzing words on a page,” Chloe explains. She learned how to think critically, ask meaningful questions, understand perspectives different from her own, and communicate ideas with a purpose. She says, “My professors challenged me to look beyond the obvious to consider not only what a text says, but why it says it and how it affects its audience.”
