Between working on the staff of the English Department undergraduate literary journal, Sink Hollow, presenting research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, and taking on a leadership role for the Creative Writing and Art Contest, Chloe Sheve, Literature Student of the Year, has been nothing short of deeply involved in her department.

Chloe Scheve isn’t just an excellent literature student — she is an accomplished writer. During her time at USU, Chloe has been able to lean into that passion for writing while engaging deeply with literature and research, working as an Undergraduate Teaching Fellow for an Introduction to Creative Nonfiction class and earning an Honorable Mention in the creative nonfiction essay category in the 2025 Utah Original Writing Competition.

For Chloe, she found support in the faculty at USU. She notes, “Mentorship is everything, especially as a first-generation student! I don’t think I would have come so far if I wasn’t able to form lasting relationships with my professors. Ashley Wells has been rooting for me since the beginning.”

After graduation, Chloe interned with Torrey House Press in Salt Lake City, an independent press that publishes books that intersect art with environmental advocacy. After a summer of working in publication, she moved to Iowa State University to start an MFA in Creative Writing.

Chloe wrapped up her time in the department with advice for English students: “You don’t have to be the best. You just have to show up, keep your head down, and do the work.”
