Meet the Student Ambassadors: Henry Hallock

The English Department has launched a new Student Ambassador program under the direction of Academic Department Coordinator Nicole Despain. Nicole says, “I am working with the ambassadors to build a community where students feel welcome, supported, and heard. They’re bringing their own experiences and ideas to the table, and we’re bringing students together, opening doors to opportunities, and making room for the unexpected connections that can turn ‘I’m just here for class’ into ‘There are my people.’ That’s the kind of community I’m excited to help build.”
Henry Hallock has been hired to aid Nicole in this vision as one of the new student ambassadors. Henry is a senior majoring in American Studies with an emphasis in American Literature and Film. He will also be receiving the Global Peace Building certificate from the Heravi Peace Institute. Henry says that he’s always loved stories and wants to do something with film when he graduates.
He shares, “I thought that English and, more specifically, American Studies, which is housed in the English Department, would help me learn about stories and human nature in a way that would be beneficial to me now and in the future.”
Henry expressed interest in becoming a student ambassador in hopes that he could create the same positive experience that he’s had in the English Department for other students as well.
Some fun facts about Henry are that he spent the last summer working at a refugee and immigration center in Ireland, he is fluent in Spanish, and that he’s travelled to Cuba, Mexico, and Argentina. He is also president of the USU Filmmaking Club.
As he enters this new position he says, “I want to be able to promote English as a major at USU and help students realize the importance and value of understanding language, communication, and story.”
