Alice Gorton Hart Memorial Award

Undergraduate Seniors

Returning senior student who is an outstanding writer of poetry (as first choice), or who is an outstanding creative writer in general (as second choice). Grade point averages achieved in non-literary subjects shall not be relevant to this selection.

Dorothy Banks Scholarship

Undergraduate Graduate

Undergraduates with a declared minor or major in Folklore, or graduate students enrolled in the MA/MS program in Folklore. Minimum GPA of 3.3.

Edith Welch Morgan Scholarship

Undergraduate Graduate

Applicants must be serious creative writers who are resident graduate or undergraduate students. The Scholarship shall be awarded to the winner among contestants in a creating writing contest.

Endowed Internship for the American Folklife Center

Graduate Need-Based

Awardees shall be graduate students in good standing in the Department of English. Demonstrated financial need with at least one semester completed and demonstrated record of reliability.

Students in the Department of English. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 with financial need.

English Student Opportunity Fund

Undergraduate Need-Based

For undergraduate students majoring in English with financial need. Meant to defray costs of study abroad, travel for research or conferences, unpaid internship (e.g., travel, housing, professional attire). Requires essay explaining how the funding will enable an opportunity to benefit education and a letter of support from faculty mentor.

Frances I. and Parker B. Arnett Scholarship

Undergraduate

Upper division students who are studying British literature with average GPA of 3.0 or greater. Not acceptable for redirection to Composition, American Literature, Folklore, or Creative Writing.

Janice Judge Dee Scholarship

Undergraduate Graduate Need-Based

For undergraduate and graduate students in the English Department. Recipients are selected based on financial need, academic promise, and scholastic achievement.

Mary Heers Endowed Scholarship

Undergraduate Graduate

For undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of English, with preference for English Teaching majors, who demonstrate potential to become inspiring English teachers and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Mehdi Heravi Endowed Fellowship for Master's Students in English

Graduate Need-Based

For enrolled master’s students in the Department of English who have a GPA of at least 3.5 and demonstrate financial need.

Ralph Jennings Smith Endowment - Creative Writing

Undergraduate Graduate Need-Based

The scholarship will be given to the winner among contestants in a creative writing contest. Recipients of the award must be enrolled as graduate or undergraduate students at USU at the time they receive the award. The award is open to any student regardless of major, but recipients should be serious creative writers. The terms and conditions for submissions to the contest will be specified each year by the director of the department's Creative Writing Contest.

T.Y. & Nan C. Booth Scholarship in English

Undergraduate Graduate

Undergraduate or graduate student, majoring in English and who demonstrates professional promise. Neither financial need nor grade point average shall necessarily be a criterion for the award.

The Lance & Mandy Cheney Endowed Scholarship

Undergraduate Graduate Need-Based

Declared majors in the Department of English with preferential consideration given to students majoring in English Teaching. Awardees shall be undergraduate or graduate students. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Demonstrated financial need.

The Lynn Langer Meeks Fellowship

Graduate

Graduate student or students in Literature and Writing whose primary interest is in the teaching of expository writing, with preference given to established English teachers, of more than three years service, who are returning for a master's degree. In the event that there are no worthy candidates for the fellowship in expository writing, the fellowship may be given to a graduate student or students whose primary interest is in British literature. In all cases, preference shall be given to established English teachers.

Veneta Leatham Nielsen Scholarship

Undergraduate Graduate

Demonstrate professional promise and have a grade point average of at least 3.0. Freshman through graduate. Highest priority shall be given to candidates majoring in English and minoring in the classics with an emphasis on classical literature of the world. The award shall not be given to students concentrating in folklore or writing courses.

Wray Family English Scholarship

Undergraduate Graduate

Tuition and fees scholarship for first generation students majoring in English. Preference for students with an emphasis in literature. Minimum GPA of 3.0.
