Haowen Chang

Biography

Taiwanese pianist Haowen Chang began studying the piano at age 5. She has performed classical music in many countries including Taiwan, China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, Serbia, and the United States. Chang has performed many concerts in Taiwan since 2015, with a recital in Taipei in May 2023 sponsored by Thunder Tune Music’s New Concert Artist Auditions. Chang has performed in the Excellence in the Community series in Salt Lake City, and multiple outreach concerts for the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation’s (UT) “Music in Our Schools” initiative, and the Summerfest in collaborate with uncsa (invited by Music Carolina NC). She has been featured in public masterclasses with Pavel Nersessian, Olga Kern, Gabriela Monteiro, Anderson & Roe, Boris Berman, Bernd Goetzke, Marina Lomazov, and more.

Chang has been recognized in competitive music events at the international, national, and regional levels, including 1st Prize in the MTNA State Competition “Young Artist Performance” (NC), 1st Prize in the INZAI International Music Competition (Japan), 1st Prize in the Utah American Liszt Society Competition (USA), 1st Prize in the UMTA Concerto Competition (USA), 3rd Prize in the PianoArt Online International Competition (Ukraine), and 4th Prize in Hong-Kong International Music Festival. Chang was a semifinalist in the Chiang-Mai Ginastera International Music Competition (Thailand). She received the highest rating (Gold) in the USCI International Festival and Competition (Malaysia), and was a winner of the Utah State University Concerto Competition. She was also selected to participate in the Atlantic Music Festival (USA), Music Fest Perugia (Italy), and the International Taipei Maestro Piano Festival (Taiwan).

Chang’s major instructors include Ling-Wei Chuang, Dr. Chia-Huei Ai, Dr. Chun-Chieh Yen, and Dr. Cahill Smith. In 2025, she graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, under Dr. Dmitri Vorobiev’s guidance, with a master’s degree. She was featuring in Chamber Festival at UNCSA and performing Schumann Quartet with Axel Strauss & Kim Kashkashian.
