Grand Piano Practice Rooms

Scheduling Instructions

Music majors whose primary instrument is piano will receive an email with instructions for scheduling practice time. If you do not receive the email, please stop in to FAC 102 and we can help you.

Policies

  • Practice rooms are intended solely for use by faculty, staff, music majors, students who are registered for Individual Instruction, and students who play in USU ensembles. Authorization for other use may only be granted by the Music Department Head.
  • Students may not share practice room access with other students or community members. Students who share access with others may be held liable for property damage or theft, and will be banned from further use of the practice rooms. When exiting a practice room, students should always make sure that the door shuts properly and is locked.
  • Food and drink of any kind are strictly prohibited in the practice rooms. Closed water bottles are permitted if they remain on the floor. Never place any liquids on or near pianos.
  • Do not place any instrument cases, coats, book bags, backpacks, or other items on any part of the piano. Allowable items include paper scores or tablet reader on the music desk, writing utensils, and metronomes or tuners.
  • The Music Department will arrange repairs and maintenance for wear that occurs with standard use of the pianos. Students will be fined if any damage to pianos is caused by misuse, abuse, or negligence. If the responsible party cannot be determined, then all students who have access to that room for that semester will share the cost associated. Those responsible will incur a bursar hold. Fines will be assessed in amounts up to:
    • $5,500 for beverage or liquid spills
    • $500 for finish scratching or chipping
    • $500 for other damage on keys or finish
    • $600 for removal/theft of artist bench
  • USU is not responsible for stolen items anywhere within the building. Do not leave instruments or other valuables unattended in practice rooms.
  • Covering practice room windows is prohibited.
  • Students should yield the room to those on the posted reservation schedule. If you believe there is an error with the schedule, please contact the Music Office.
  • During unscheduled hours, if a practice room is empty for more than 10 minutes, it will be assumed available. Students cannot hold a place in a practice room with books, music, etc.
  • Private instruction not related to USU curricular programs or Youth Conservatory is not allowed in the practice rooms or other Music Department Facilities without express permission of the Music Department Head.
  • Under no circumstances are pianos to be moved within a building or outside of a building without the permission and supervision of the Piano Area Coordinator.

  • After payment, your information will be sent from the Music Department to USU Facilities. It may take 2-4 business days to make it all the way through the process.
  • If you already have a prox card, your practice room access will be added to the card that's already in your possession. You will not need to pick up a new card.
  • If you do not already have a prox card, you will receive an email notification when your new card is ready for pick-up. Bring a government-issued ID and be prepared to pay the $5 fee.
  • Student access will expire each semester. In future semesters, your access will be renewed by re-activating the card that is already in your possession. You will NOT need to pick up a new prox card each semester.
  • If you experience an issue with scanning your prox card, please wait 30 seconds and then attempt to scan your card a second time. If the issue persists, contact Facilities Customer Service at 435-797-3535. For after-hours access issues, call USU Dispatch at 435-797-1939.

Report Piano Problems

Please use the Piano Service Request Form to report problems such as broken strings, sticking keys, damper issues, etc. If items such as pencils or paperclips fall inside the piano, do not attempt to remove them yourself - report it immediately to the Music Office (FAC 102).
