Welcome

Welcome to the Music Therapy Program at Utah State University, where excellence is cultivated with integrity. As part of our program, you will embark on a journey designed to fulfill the competency-based education required of a professional music therapist, aligning with the values of our institution and the Music Department.

Drawing upon the rich traditions of music therapy education, we are committed to providing you with a comprehensive and competency-based curriculum that prepares you for success as a student, clinician, and ultimately, a board-certified music therapist. Our dedicated faculty and staff, with diverse backgrounds in clinical practice, teaching, and research, are here to guide you as you develop your own clinical style and philosophy.

At Utah State University, we recognize the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement in shaping the future of music therapy. Through clinical field placements and applied learning experiences, you will have the opportunity to work with diverse populations, fostering critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills essential for clinical practice.

In addition to meeting the academic and clinical requirements set forth by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), we are committed to upholding the values of professionalism and ethical practice outlined in the AMTA Code of Ethics and Professional Competencies. Our program is designed to prepare you not only for the demands of contemporary professional practice, but also to inspire you to become agents of positive change in your communities.

In our program, we uphold the mission and vision of USU's Music Department to cultivate and model excellence. Our goal is to enable you to realize your full creative potential as an artist and a scholar. We aim to create an environment that welcomes all and nurtures individual growth.

Welcome to Utah State University, where your journey to becoming a board-certified music therapist begins. We are honored to have you as part of our community, and we look forward to supporting your growth and development every step of the way.

Music Therapy Organizations for Students

Our AMTA-approved program is affiliated with the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), the Western Regional chapter (WRAMTA), and the Utah Association of Music Therapists (UAMT). We encourage students to join these organizations for networking, resources, scholarships, continuing education, and event access. Affiliations with these organizations is an important part of your education and development of professional practice standards. Do not underestimate the impact of your voice and contributions beginning with USUMTSA!
