Utah State University’s Department of Social Work offers this 8-hour, synchronous training for licensed mental health professionals who provide, or plan to provide, clinical supervision. The training is designed to meet Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) requirements for clinical supervisor training under R156-60e-306.1.
Developed and taught by experienced clinical social work educators and practitioners, the course combines required content with practical tools supervisors can use in their day-to-day work.

- Building and maintaining an effective supervisory relationship
- Supporting supervisee learning and professional development
- Supervision methods, techniques, and feedback
- Ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities
- Cultural humility and responsiveness in supervision
- Evaluation and documentation
- Administrative responsibilities and supervision agreements
- Managing challenges, boundaries, and difficult conversations in supervision
Participants will have opportunities to apply concepts through discussion, case examples, and practical exercises. Participants will have ongoing access to the course, even after completing it.
Continuing Education
Participants who attend the full training and complete all required activities will receive a certificate of completion and 8 hours of continuing education credit, including 2 ethics CEUs.
This training is synchronous and requires active participation throughout the full 8-hour course. It will be held in person in Logan, Price, and Tooele with Zoom options as well.
Who Should Attend
This training is intended for Utah licensed mental health professionals who are seeking to become DOPL-approved clinical supervisors or who want to strengthen their clinical supervision skills.
Participants are responsible for confirming that they meet all additional DOPL requirements for approved clinical supervisors.

Krista Duarte, MSW, LCSW
Krista Duarte is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Utah State University with more than a decade of clinical practice experience across inpatient, outpatient, and private practice settings. Her experience includes clinical licensure supervision and leadership in trauma-informed services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Her areas of expertise include complex trauma, clinical supervision, and community-based behavioral health practice.
Denise Rice-Prior, DSW, LCSW
Denise Rice-Prior is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Utah State University with extensive clinical experience in crisis intervention, behavioral health, corrections, substance use treatment, and community mental health. Her background includes clinical supervision as well as many years providing psychiatric crisis and substance use assessments in hospital emergency departments, jails, and correctional settings.
Julie Stevens, MSW, LCSW
Julie Stevens is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Utah State University with practice expertise in community mental health, school social work, advocacy, and community engagement. Her teaching and clinical work emphasize connecting social work knowledge with real-world practice and preparing practitioners to respond effectively to the needs of the communities they serve.
Jan Thornton, MSW, LCSW
Jan Thornton is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Social Work Lab at USU Eastern. A licensed clinical social worker since 2006, Jan has extensive experience providing psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and clinical supervision and currently supervises clinicians and social work practicum students through the Social Work Lab. Her clinical background also includes child welfare, juvenile justice, trauma treatment, family therapy, and community behavioral health.
Chesney Ward, PhD, LCSW
Chesney Ward is an Assistant Professor at Utah State University with nearly a decade of practice experience in hospice, healthcare, private practice, and clinical licensure supervision. Her practice and research expertise includes end-of-life care, successful aging, healthcare access, and serving rural and underserved communities.
