USU High School Bridge Program for Languages

The Bridge Program allows high school students to earn college-level credit while in high school. The Bridge Program courses are taught at specific high schools in Utah. The program allows high school students to earn credit toward a minor in their chosen language.

Benefits of Learning a Language

Earning a minor in a language complements almost any major and can open new career options. There are many opportunites for whose who speak other languages in goverment and private industry. Learning a new language also makes it easier to understand other cultures.

At USU students who have completed the Bridge Program can advance their language skills by participating in USU language clubs and study abroad programs. Students can also access the USU language lab for help in improving their conversation, reading, and writing skills.

Minor Pathways

GPA of 3.0 or above is required to obtain a minor in the Bridge Program languages. The minor in the language of interest can be earned by completing the requirements as outlined below.

Chinese
Students who score 5 on the AP exam may take CHIN 3010. Chinese conversation course (CHIN 3000) is required for students who score 3 or 4 on the AP exam.
  • 1 Bridge Program course: 3010 and three more 3-credit upper-division Chinese electives
  • 2 Bridge Program courses: CHIN 3010 and two more 3-credit upper-division Chinese electives
  • 3 Bridge Program courses: CHIN 3010 and one other 3-credit upper-division Chinese elective

French
  • 1 Bridge Program course: Four more 3-credit upper-division French electives
  • 2 Bridge Program courses: Three more 3-credit upper-division French electives
  • 3 Bridge Program courses: Two more 3-credit upper-division French electives

Portuguese
  • 1 Bridge Program course: Take four more 3-credit upper-division Portuguese electives
  • 2 Bridge Program courses: Take three more 3-credit upper-division Portuguese electives
  • 3 Bridge Program courses: Take two more 3-credit upper-division Portuguese electives

Spanish
  • 1 Bridge Program course: take 4 additional courses, one course each from groups (listed below) 1, 3, 4, and 5
  • 2 Bridge Program courses: take 3 additional courses, one course each from groups 1, 3, and 4
  • 3 Bridge Program courses: take 2 additional courses, one course each from groups 1 and 3
