Alisha Grant & Megan Codling - 2021
Artist's Statement
For this project we wanted to create a project that would merge a creative outlet to the material waste that takes place in America. In Unveiling theAnthropocene, our group was very interested in the statistics and facts of how much of America’s resources have been used and wasted. For our project, we filmed an embroidery piece that was in the shape of the United States of America being destroyed. At the beginning of the video, the piece is full of green thread webbed together. Throughout the video, the thread was cut and ripped out of the fabric. In the end, the only thing left was a black outline of the United States. We wanted to use an artistic method to showcase how harmful stripping our natural resources is to the environment. Using embroidery was an interesting way to showcase the stripping of resources that not only help us, but also create the beautiful environment we have. Because of the ongoing pandemic our group decided to be as socially distant as possible. This created a great challenge to create art while being separated. Megan Codling created the embroidery piece as well as the film of the destruction of the piece. Alisha Grant took on the research part of the project. She created the script and audio that went over the video. She edited the video as well. The responsibilities were separated equally and fairly. Overall, we feel that this project was successful in showing an artistic example of the destruction of the natural resources in America
