Artist's Statement
The project I am submitting is a collection of 8 stickers that I created to help increase awareness about the variety of issues the world is facing. Some of the topics I focused on include; overconsumption of natural resources, pollution and extinction, and climate change. I decided to create stickers because it is something small that can be put on a water bottle or a laptop that will be seen by people on a regular basis. Part of my project was to pass out some of the completed stickers because if we are going to try and help solve the problems we are facing, we need to get others involved. I am still waiting to get the stickers printed but I plan to pass some of them out in the coming weeks.
The motivation for each sticker is explained in the PDF with the corresponding design, but I was genuinely motivated by some of the shocking things we talked about over the course of the semester. Specifically the ones that really stuck with me and sometimes even made me uncomfortable. Some of the issues in the world are happening and I had no idea the simple things I do on a regular are part of the larger problem and informing others and creating awareness is what my ultimate goal with this project was.
My process was going back through the course material and looking at the things that really impacted me and then using that idea to come up with a design that was simple enough that it could be a simple sticker but still have a deeper overall meaning. My designs are more on the “cute” side of design because I thought if they were darker like the actual topic and global situation can seem, people might not want such a negative reminder on their belongings. I tried to base my designs on the types of stickers I currently have and like, but I fully understand that everyone’s personal tastes are unique.
