Artist's Statement

I believe that we need to treat our world with respect and care because it is our home. However, our current lifestyles often abuse its resources, which ultimately limits our options for continued living under our current patterns. To encourage a change of routine, I developed a program using the principles discussed in class about the topics that contribute to a damaged ecosystem. It promoted environmentally healthy and sustainable behaviors to encourage myself and others to make small adjustments to our daily living that will protect our planet. This program was called “Where the Sagebrush Grows.”

It was a competition among residents in the Living Learning Community to collect the most points, which were awarded for sustainable behavior. Residents could complete a Google form at the end of every day, documenting the green habits they practiced that day. Habits were grouped into six categories – transportation, food, water, energy, recycling, and consumption – and were allotted different point values, based on environmental impact and difficulty of adopting the habit. At the end of the event, prizes were given based on the number of points won.
