Artist's Statement

Over the course of this term, I learnt a lot about the exploitation of the planet. We are running out of resources and if we don’t reach a balance point on our terms than we will be forced into a less comfortable one. In particular I was interested in this idea of growth at all costs. If we keep heading in the direction we are, then we will exponentially use up the rest of our resources. For my final project I made a graphite and ink illustration of the planet. This is an artistic representation of exploitation and death. The earth is shown as a skull with its surface clinging to it and hanging off it in folds. Attached at the neck, pipes lead away from it, sucking away its life. The surface hugs the skull like face, in an air of suffocation. I felt that this was symbolic of both resource exploitation and pollution.
