Artist's Statement

“Even if you never have the chance to see or touch the ocean, the ocean touches you with every breath you take, every drop of water you drink, every bite you consume. Everyone, everywhere is inextricably connected to and utterly dependent upon the existence of the sea.”

— Dr. Sylvia Earle, oceanographer and author of The World is Blue

For my project, I wanted to create something that would bring awareness to the bleaching of our ocean’s corals. My intention for this piece was to try and show that the coral’s vibrancy and color were “washing away”. This is also why I chose to use watercolor as my medium because I think that it reflects the lack of permanence of these organisms. Tragically, without our action, the coral will be almost entirely gone by 2050.
