Consumerism

Artist's Statement

This piece is two panels of oil on canvas. When creating this diptych, I would sit with both canvases in front of me on easels and I would paint a section at a time moving back and forth between the two canvases. Whatever I did to one canvas I would try to recreate it as similar as possible to the other. The big inspiration for this piece is the line that was said that every consumer good has a factory behind it. In a way I tried to represent that in the mirror image, trying to emulate the factory by creating the same image twice.

This piece represents one of our broken systems, consumerism. This piece depicts a mirror image of my bathroom counter with all the different personal care items that I have. By creating a diptych and creating the same painting twice shown on top of each other, I was able to create a mirror image to show the constant state of our consuming. The mirrored image also shows that we are stuck in an infinite loop unless we do something about it. This piece was as much for me as it is for everyone else just to be more conscious and to open eyes and think about what personal systems, we have that can change which hopefully will help in changing the larger systems to save our planet both for ourselves and for future generations.
