Artist's Statement

I decided to do my project on the oil refineries, specifically the ones that surround Salt Lake City. These refineries have been one of the highest contributors to air pollution in the SLC area since the early 1900’s. I chose to replace one of the smoke stacks with a cigarette because I found a lot of striking similarities to the two. Even with the knowledge we have regarding the harmful nature of these things, we continue to regularly use them without consistently pursuing alternatives due to the systems in place.
