Artist's Statement
Given my lack of artistic ability, I decided to challenge myself with this project and write a poem titled Home about agriculture. I’ve never been great at poetry but I felt that it always was able to speak to me. I wanted to use this medium to try to get the reader to feel something they way I did going over this topic in class. It was a way for me to grow in my artistic ability but also to try to make the reader understand how I felt about this topic. I also felt that staying on this one topic would be more helpful as opposed to jumping around to different subjects.
When we discussed agriculture in class, I found it to be one of the most fascinating topics covered. I also felt that it is something most people don’t really know about. I really learned a lot about how poor our agriculture system is on the planet and unsustainable it was. I really wanted to convey that in the Poem I titled Home. In my poem, I tried to put an emphasis on regenerative agriculture and how we can make the system cleaner and more sustainable through it. I really just wanted to show that we could do a much better job in this area of our society. Though my poem I hope to inspire change towards a more sustainable system and future.
Poem
The Earth is our home,
A place we call our own,
But our actions have caused
A change that’s not unknown.
The climate is changing,
In ways we can't ignore,
And our food system's impact,
We simply can’t afford.
Our food can come from the land,
In harmony with nature's way,
Through regenerative agriculture,
A sustainable, life- giving display.
With regenerative practices in place,
Our farming can restore the soil,
And crops can thrive with diverse space,
A future for generations to uncoil.
The soil is losing its health,
And the crops are in decline,
But we can make a difference,
With practices that are aligned.
We need to take action with our might,
Shift to regenerative agriculture and treat,
Our planet right, with sustainable practices in sight,
Reducing emissions and conserving water to beat.
From field to fork, we must act,
With conscious choices and demand for change,
For a better Earth we must impact,
And a sustainable food system we must arrange.
