Creature of Comfort

Artist's Statement

Throughout the semester, I took class notes like most students. However, I also took notes on anything that was interesting to me artistically, as a songwriter. If something was said in the lecture or by a classmate that I thought was poetic or poignant in any way, I would write it down. For my final project, I wrote a song and referenced many phrases and words from the notes I took. I chose the title “Creature of Comfort” and referenced the theme that was common in lectures throughout the semester. The idea that “this is not a story of villains, but a story of systems”. I turned the idea that we are all “Creatures of Comfort” as the “enemy” or “villain” humanity might need to finally take action. I enjoyed playing with different meanings with the words and phrases we’ve used to tell the story of the anthropocene.

Lyrics

When did we draw the line
Bit by bit
Between the tree trunk and the spine
Bit by bit
Between a breath and a price
Bit by bit
Between your life and mine

Creature of comfort
Human Condition
Individualism
Creature of Comfort
A common enemy
World War Three
The death of you and me

How has it come to this
Bit by bit
If I can’t see it it doesn’t exist
Bit by bit
Stealing from the future
Bit by bit
If I’m not there, what can it hurt?

Creature of comfort
Human Condition
Individualism
Creature of Comfort
A common enemy
World War Three
The death of you and me

It’s the water we swim in
It’s the air we’re breathin

Creature of comfort
Human Condition
Individualism
Creature of Comfort
A common enemy
World War Three
The death of you and me
