Artist's Statement
In today’s consumerist society, many people have become concerned about the need for products to be sustainable and environmentally friendly. Companies have taken notice, plastering their products with green imagery and eco-friendly buzzwords like “natural,” “plant-based,” “eco-friendly,” “green,” etc. However, these claims are often misleading at best and outright deceptive at worst - a practice known as greenwashing.
My creative process included researching this social issue as well as an in-depth study of design discourse. The poster project focuses on the issue of greenwashing buzzwords that flood our advertising and product design. The design is intended to lead the eye in with its intriguing layout and treatment of typography, just as companies use environmentally friendly claims to draw us toward certain products. While these claims may attract us, we need to be aware of the exaggerated or blatantly false statements these companies make. We must demand real environmental accountability, not just pretty packaging and marketing double-speak. Only then can we as consumers make truly informed, sustainable choices.
