Artist's Statement
The topic I wanted to focus on was biodiversity loss. Biodiversity loss is an issue that spans across the entire planet and presents huge problems for our world. My project is a series of three illustrations layered over photos of old dictionary pages. Each illustration depicts a different species which is listed as a “sensitive species'' by the Utah Bureau of Land Management. These are species whose populations show evidence of decline and which require special consideration in order to promote their conservation. They may be sensitive to the activity of the forest and grassland management. Out of the list, I chose three species which can be found in Cache Valley: the monarch butterfly, the burrowing owl, and the boreal toad. I wanted to bring attention to some species in our local area who might require attention
