Canary Magazine

Artist's Statement
“Canary'' is a blend of art, culture, and the climate. Our quarterly magazine prints essays supported by illustrations to spotlight environmental issues and ways we can collectively change our culture to achieve a vibrant sustainable future.
Our title is a metaphor; historically canaries were used by miners as an early warning system. They were brought into the mines because they were more sensitive to dangerous gasses such as carbon monoxide. They would show signs of struggle long before any humans would. This is the purpose of “Canary”; to warn.
«««of heavy content we employ the use of illustrations and “good news” stories to lighten the tone
Inspired by the article, “Magazine Culture” by Jeremy Leslie, like many other independent magazines, “Canary” aims to reinvent the way people consume editorial content. In contrast to the formulaic and predictable Lifestyle magazines, we specifically focus on novelty in our design and our content. “Canary” is curated to bring content to educate and inspire readers to make positive change.
For this project I used Adobe InDesign and my own hand drawn illustrations.
