Now is the Winter of Our Discontent

Artist's Statement

I was first approached by Rebecca Baker in the fall of 2022, where she asked me to play an ensemble piece which she had written called Now is the Winter of Our Discontent. Because of that interaction, she asked me this semester to play a piece for solo cello titled PALF8DOC026. The strange title comes from a test tube label used in scientific experiments measuring the effects of climate change. The piece opens sparsely, invoking a feeling of insignificance. However, as it develops and becomes more turbulent, the audience gets the feeling that there’s something more to everything: that this test tube represents something more than just a sample, or a test result. It represents a bigger problem that needs to be solved.
