Applied Math/Mathbio Journal Club

The applied math/mathbio journal club is a weekly meeting of undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs, and professors interested in applied mathematics and applications. We welcome students and researchers from within or outside mathematics, and the club is open to everyone, regardless of where you are in your degree or career.

Our activities include seminars, informal talks, and student-focused activities such as reading papers, working on projects, and professional development activities.

Date Day Speaker Institution Topic / Notes Abstract
9-9-2026 Wednesday Changhong Mou, Department of Mathematics and Statistics Math, USU A Brief Introduction to Scientific Machine Learning Can a neural network solve a differential equation? Can it learn one? Scientific machine learning combines the equations we trust from physics and biology with the flexibility of modern machine learning, aiming at problems where data are limited but the model is known, or where the model is known but simulations are too slow to run thousands of times. This talk introduces the three ideas in the field: physics-informed neural networks (PINN), Deep Operator Network (DeepONet), and the Fourier Neural Operator (FNO), explaining what each one does well, where each one fails, and how to get started with them.
