Origin Story
It started with a question. What prevents people from healing?

What if people could quiet the noise in their minds and reconnect with what truly matters?
That question inspired Dr. Stanley H. Block and Carolyn Bryant Block to develop the I-System Model in the late 1990s. Their research explored how identity and stress shape thought and behavior, and how awareness can restore calm and clarity.
Their work led to Mind-Body Bridging®, a set of practical tools that help people notice when they’ve become reactive and return to balance in real time.
When awareness is present, the clutter clears and the mind becomes available.

Bridging the Mind and Body at Utah State University
In 2019, with generous support and a shared commitment to public service, Utah State University established the I-System Institute for Transdisciplinary Studies within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Institute was founded to extend this research into the world — through education, training, and outreach that support well-being and resilience in individuals, families, and communities.

Certification and Professional Training
The I-System Model and Mind-Body Bridging Certification Program offers two courses: Foundation and Advanced.
- Graduate-level clinicians who complete the sequence earn certification as MBB Practicioners.
- Bachelor-level licensed substance use counselors may enroll in the continuing education track to become Certified MBB Substance Abuse Counselors.
Each course blends academic rigor with personal application, helping practitioners bring awareness-based methods into therapy, education, and leadership.
