Talk Description
Mathematicians Seth Porter, undergraduate researcher, and Matt Young, faculty member in USU’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics, conduct research in the theory of knots. While knots appear in many familiar situations, such as tying one's shoes, securing a boat, or setting up a belay for rock climbing, they also play a fundamental role in mathematics and its applications to problems in the natural sciences. Seth and Matt will “untangle” the mathematics of knots, while highlighting the benefits of getting involved in undergraduate research.
