Stop Stressing, Start Living: How the RELACS Method Can Help
If you're new to Mind-Body Bridging, here's the basic idea: it's a research-backed approach that helps you manage stress by teaching you to notice what's happening in your mind and body, right in the moment. Instead of just powering through when you feel anxious or overwhelmed, Mind-Body Bridging shows you how to pause, get curious about your thoughts and body sensations, and gently shift out of stress mode. By connecting what's going on in your head with what's happening in your body, you can return to feeling focused, calm, and more like yourself.
Have you ever found yourself stuck in a loop, replaying yesterday's conversation for the hundredth time or fixating on things that haven't even happened? If so, you're definitely not alone. We all deal with these mental loops, and at the I-System Institute, we recognize them as signs that your I-System, the busy inner part that jumps in whenever stress or expectations show up, has taken center stage.
When your I-System kicks in, it fills your mind with chatter, makes your body tense, and keeps you from tapping into your natural clarity and calm. But there's a simple, proven way to break the cycle and reconnect with that centered place inside. It's called RELACS.
When the I-System ramps up, we can feel trapped in cycles of worry, tension, and self-doubt. Cut off from our natural resilience. But you don't have to stay stuck. The RELACS method offers a simple, proven way to notice what's happening, interrupt the spiral, and reconnect with your sense of clarity and calm.
That's where the RELACS method comes in. At the I-System Institute, we teach RELACS as a practical tool for getting unstuck when stress or mental clutter takes over. In this guide, you'll see how RELACS works, why it matters, and how you can start using it—right in the middle of daily life—to build real mental resilience, one step at a time.
What is the RELACS Method?
RELACS stands for Recognize, Label, and Come to Your Senses. It's a straightforward, step-by-step approach that helps you catch those moments when your I-System is active and guide yourself out of stress mode. Instead of getting lost in a sea of anxious thoughts or trying to think your way out of feeling overwhelmed, RELACS encourages you to pause, notice what's actually happening, and reconnect with your body and your environment. Using this method, you can quiet the mental noise and ease the tension, allowing yourself to return to a clear, calm state—even when life feels chaotic.
Think of RELACS as your go-to checklist whenever life ramps up the pressure and stress starts to take over. Rather than fighting with your thoughts or trying to force yourself to relax, this method encourages a gentle pause. It's all about paying attention to what's really happening in your mind and body, without judging yourself or trying to push anything away. By just noticing and accepting your experience right now, you can break the cycle of stress and give yourself a little space to reconnect with clarity and calm.
The RELACS method is designed to help you gently quiet your I-System and guide you back to a sense of calm and focus. When your I-System gets triggered, it's easy to fall into problem-solving mode or try to control every uncomfortable thought or feeling. But RELACS invites you to take a step back, pause, and shift away from that urge to fix things. By doing this, you return to what we call your Natural Functioning. The clear, grounded version of yourself that's always there beneath the stress. Even in the middle of chaos, these steps help you heal, think clearly, and regain your sense of ease.
Why We Need RELACS
It's tempting to think we can just will ourselves out of stress. Maybe you tell yourself, "Just stop worrying!" or, "Calm down, this isn't a big deal." But in our experience at the I-System Institute, those good intentions can actually add to the pressure. The harder you try to force your mind to be quiet, the more your I-System turns up the volume, leaving you with even more racing thoughts and tension.
What makes the RELACS method unique is that it encourages you to get out of your head and back into your senses. Instead of staying stuck in anxious thoughts, you gently shift your focus to what's happening right now, what you can see, hear, or feel. This simple act helps your mind and body let go of stress mode for a moment. With this sensory approach, you can quiet the I-System, think more clearly, and reconnect with yourself and the world around you.
RELACS Your I-System
Recognize When Your -System Is Active
Defuse Requirements we have for ourselves or others.
What do you do about your Requirements so that they lose their power to over-activate your I-System? You can follow a three-step process to defuse them.
- Step One is called Recognize your I-System. This involves recognizing in your mind and body that your I-System has become overactive due to a violated Requirement.
-
Step Two is Labeling the Requirement. This is done by stating the Requirement in your mind and then simply labeling it for what it is: A Requirement.
For example,
Requirement: "Life should be fair."
Label: "I have a Requirement that life should be fair" or "That's my Requirement."
-
Step Three is Come to Your Senses. This step is all about using your senses to bring yourself back to the present moment when your mind is spinning and your body is tense. By tuning in to your immediate environment (what you can see, hear, touch, smell, or taste) you shift your attention away from the worries in your mind and back into your body and surroundings. This gives your nervous system a break, helps melt away some of that tension, and lets you feel more grounded, right here and now.
Here are a few simple sensory exercises you can try whenever you notice stress ramping up:
-
5-4-3-2-1 Grounding
- Look around and name five things you can see: maybe a tree outside the window, the pattern on the wall, or the color of your coffee mug.
- Notice four things you can feel: your feet on the floor, the warmth of your sweater, your back against the chair, or the coolness of the air on your skin.
- Listen for three things you can hear: the hum of your computer, the sound of birds, or your own breathing.
- Notice two things you can smell: it might be your lunch or the scent of a book.
- Finish by focusing on one thing you can taste: even just the flavor left from a sip of water.
-
Mindful Touch
- Pick up an object near you, like a pen or a piece of fabric. Pay close attention to its weight, texture, and temperature. Notice every detail as if you're exploring it for the first time.
-
Sound Check
- Close your eyes for a moment and listen for any sounds around you. Try to layer the sounds, noticing what's closest and what's farthest away. Let the sounds pass by like clouds in the sky.
-
Breath Awareness
- Place a hand on your belly and simply notice your breathing. Feel the rise and fall with each inhale and exhale. This gentle focus can help you settle and return to a sense of calm.
By practicing these simple exercises, even for a minute or two, you give your mind a break from mental clutter and help your body reset. Come to Your Senses isn't about escaping reality, it's about reminding yourself that you are safe and present, even in the middle of everyday stress. This small act can make a big difference in how you move through challenging moments.
-
Label Requirements
Before we go further, let's talk about what "Requirements" really are. In Mind-Body Bridging, Requirements are those hidden rules or expectations your mind creates, like "I should always be in control," or "Others must like me." These "shoulds" and "musts" aren't about goals or healthy standards; they're rigid, often unrealistic demands that can make life feel tense and high-stakes. When a Requirement isn't met (for example, when you make a mistake or someone disagrees with you), your I-System gets triggered. That's when stress ramps up, thoughts start racing, and your body tightens. Noticing and labeling these Requirements is a powerful way to break their hold and bring your system back into balance.
- Pause and identify what triggered your I-System. Was there an internal rule, expectation, or a "should/must" that wasn't met? Notice what mental story popped up, like "I should never make mistakes" or "Others must always approve of me."
- Pay attention to how your mind and body react in that moment. What thoughts raced in? Where do you feel tension or discomfort?
Come to Your Senses
Let's make this real with an example. Picture this: You get a critical email from your boss, and suddenly your heart starts pounding. Your mind rushes straight to worst-case scenarios. "I'm going to get fired!" This rush of intense thoughts and body tension is a perfect display of your I-System springing into action, sounding the alarm that something important (maybe a Requirement) feels threatened.
So, how does this actually look in practice? Let's break down how you might use RELACS, step by step, in a real-life moment of stress:
- Recognize: "My heart is pounding and my mind is jumping to worst-case scenarios. My I-System is overactivated."
-
Label:
Defuse Requirements: What do you do about your Requirements so that they lose their power to over-activate your I-System? You can follow a three-step process to defuse them.
- Step One is called Recognize your I-System. This involves recognizing in your mind and body that your I-System has become overactive due to a violated Requirement. (For example, "I shouldn't get fired" or "I should always follow through."
- Step Two is Labeling the Requirement. This is done by stating the Requirement in your mind and then simply labeling it for what it is: A Requirement.
For example,Requirement: "I shouldn't get fired."
Label: "I have a Requirement that I shouldn't get fired" or "That's my Requirement."
- Come to Your Senses: "I feel the smooth surface of my computer mouse under my hand. I hear the gentle hum of the refrigerator in the background. I notice the steady weight of my body in the chair, grounding me here and now."
With just a few minutes of practicing the RELACS steps, you help your brain move out of stress mode and return to your natural balance. Instead of feeling hijacked by panic or overwhelm, you create enough space to respond more clearly. Like writing a thoughtful reply to your boss instead of reacting on impulse. This is the heart of building resilience with RELACS: using simple tools to notice when your I-System gets stirred up, pause the cycle, and bring yourself back to clarity and calm when you need it most.
The Benefits of Daily Practice
RELACS isn't just something you pull out in a crisis. When you weave these steps into your everyday routine, you're actually training your mind and body to recover more quickly whenever stress pops up. Think of it as building up your resilience muscle—each time you practice, you make it easier for yourself to step out of overwhelm and return to that natural sense of clarity and calm, right in the middle of whatever life throws your way.

Small, simple steps like these can help you reconnect with yourself and make a real difference in how you feel.
Remember, resilience isn't about never feeling stressed or overwhelmed. It's about noticing when stress shows up and having simple tools, like RELACS, to help you find your way back to balance.
