Valedictorian

The College of Arts and Sciences valedictorian is a graduating senior recognized for their strong academic achievement and evidence of excellence in multiple domains such as student leadership, research/creative activities, and experiential learning. The valedictorian serves as an exemplary representative of their class and will deliver a speech at the College’s commencement.

Criteria

The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences oversees the valedictorian nomination process. Selection is based on a minimum of a USU and Overall GPA of at least 3.98. Additional criteria considered include (but are not limited to):

  • Academic awards, honors, and recognitions that help demonstrate excellence beyond grades
  • Experiential learning participation including internships, work and volunteer experiences related to their major(s), and study abroad
  • Involvement in and commitment to the pursuit of research and/or creative activities excellence
  • Leadership experience including serving as an officer in clubs, campus organizations, and relevant community organizations
  • Clear career and/or additional educational intentions following graduation
  • Additional factors such as academic resiliency, unique journeys to success, breadth and depth of educational experience may also be considered

Nomination Materials

The Dean’s Office oversees the valedictorian process, identifying potential candidates in the fall semester. 

Recognition

The College of Arts and Sciences valedictorian will deliver a speech at the College’s commencement ceremony. They will also compete with other college valedictorians to present the a speech at the University-wide commencement ceremony.
